Three categories of invisible signals trigger detection. First, C2PA / Content Credentials — cryptographic manifests stored as JUMBF atoms inside the image file. These explicitly declare "Generated by AI" with a full provenance chain. Second, XMP AI flags — fields like DigitalSourceType: trainedAlgorithmicMedia baked into the image metadata by tools like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Adobe Firefly. Third, encoder fingerprints — specific encoding artifacts left by generation pipelines, such as Lavc (FFmpeg) or x264 SEI markers in compressed exports. A raw AI export can carry 144 metadata tags that a platform scans automatically, often within seconds of upload.
These signals exist independently of anything visible in the image. A watermark you can't see — because it's invisible metadata — is what gets you flagged, even after you've cropped out the visible sparkle or text overlay.
